HOT•BED PRESENTS
ART POWERING LIVES
HOT•BED is pleased to present Art Powering Lives, a three-person show featuring works by Alyson Denny, Lyn Godley, and Carmine DeVivi curated by HOT BED’s Owner and Creative Director Bryan Hoffman. Art Powering Lives is inspired by Livent’s mission to “harness lithium technology to power people’s lives for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable world.” Since its discovery in 1817, lithium has been a powerful resource used in everything from treatment of bipolar disorder to thermonuclear devices. The lightest metal in the world, lithium is sometimes referred to as “white gold” or the “new gasoline” due to its prevalence in batteries and electronics.
The works selected for Art Powering Lives engage core tenets of Livent’s purpose: power, energy, innovation, and sustainability. Alyson Denny’s body of work is experimental in nature. Denny constantly innovates her process of photographing light. She manipulates light sources, converting energy into a visual form that directly impacts viewers’ moods and emotions. Lyn Godley’s artworks are electrically powered, often by lithium batteries. She is constantly pushing the limits of the technology in her field, experimenting with light frequencies scientifically proven to have a positive effect on human health. Carmine DeVivi’s work was always inspired by his environment and the people around him. The colors, patterns, and textures are results of a sustainable art practice he was able to keep going throughout his entire life. When brought together, these works power the lives of the viewers and inspire innovation.
Art has always reflected power. Throughout history, individuals who produced or commissioned art were seen as imbued with special powers. Artisans and patrons created masterpieces out of raw materials. These cultural breakthroughs have powered and empowered the lives of thousands across centuries, reminding all of the transformative potential within each of us and acting as a source of intellectual power.
